Sports & outdoor events

Every year, in March, the Annual Tobacco Road Marathon & Half Marathon takes place in nearby Cary, which is approximately 30 minutes by car, from Durham.

The course of the race takes runners along rolling country roads, following an out-and-back loop route along roadways and highways, as well as through the American Tobacco Trail that follows the former Norfolk Southern Railroad, travelling through the farming communities in North Carolina's Durham, Chatham and Wake counties.

The main beneficiaries of this year's race were the non-profit organizations called Wounded Warrior Project and TRTC (Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy).

Amateurs should know that registrations for the 2011 edition of this fun event have started, and organizers promise that the course will be as challenging and as scenic as this year's edition!

Festivals

Durham is home to the American Dance Festival, which has been named the largest contemporary dance festival in the country. In 2010, the festival has been scheduled on June 10 and will last until July 24, and as the name of the event suggests, the festival consists in numerous dance performances, which are held at Duke and the Durham Performing Arts Center. If your trip to Durham is set in June, be sure not to miss this fabulous, wonderful, entertaining and cultural event!
